Farm Markets, U-Picks & Orchards
The most famous crop in North Georgia may be our crisp apples, but you’ll also find plenty of other farm-fresh fruits, veggies and seasonal goodies ripe for the picking!
Food in its natural state … no packaging … no preservatives … just juicy goodness. That’s what you’ll find on the North Georgia Farm Trail — whether you’re picking plump blueberries at a local berry patch, choosing sweet Silver Queen corn at a roadside farmers market or plucking crisp, red apples right off the trees. When you buy your produce straight from a local farm or orchard, you are simply getting better-tasting, fresher fruits and veggies. And, chances are, they’re better for you, too, with fewer pesticides and less processing than you’ll find in a typical grocery store.
Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find plenty of pick-your-own opportunities along the North Georgia Farm Trail. Of course, there’s no rushing Mother Nature, so be sure to check websites or call ahead for picking events and schedules.

Hughes Sorghum Syrup Mill
Sorghum Sales • Tours • ProcessingSince 1954, Olin Hughes and his family have been growing sorghum and boiling the juice into some of the sweetest-tasting syrup around. In North Georgia, nothing is better than homemade biscuits slathered with hot sorghum syrup (this natural sweetener is also the perfect addition to gingerbread and oatmeal cookies). The process starts with fall cane-cutting. The cane is run through a masher and then filtered into a steaming vat, where it’s cooked off until it becomes sweet golden syrup. The Hughes family welcomes visitors to the syrup mill during the fall processing season — just follow your nose to the sweet, steamy smell of sorghum in the air! No website or Facebook page available. Please call ahead to verify hours of operation and inquire about purchasing sorghum. Logan Turnpike Mill
Stone Ground Grits • Corn Meal • Porridge • Mixes/FlourGeorge and Cecilia Holland are no strangers to the, er … daily grind! At Logan Turnpike Mill, they lovingly make grits, cornmeal and flour the old-fashioned way — using the whole grain and processing at a slower speed to enhance taste and preserve vital nutrients. Local farmers provide the corn, and the wheat comes from Montana, where the cold climate and soil produce a high protein grain. Rye is sourced from the Midwest, and buckwheat comes from up-state New York. Visitors can see their Three Grain Pancake Mix , Pioneer Porridge or Old Fashioned Speckled Grits being stone ground as they watch. Or, order online, and George and Cecilia will custom grind your order, hand-package it in a distinctive cotton cloth bag and ship it out the same day it’s ground. Either way, you’re in for a taste that’s as authentic as it gets! The Hollands purchased the mill in 1986. They carried on the tradition of the original owners: to go around to country fairs demonstrating corn grinding. But they expanded and started telling folks of the good nutrition and wonderful taste of freshly ground grains. Stop in the store to check out the antique Williams gristmill circa 1916 and the 1926 Fairbanks Morse hit-n-miss engine mounted on a buckboard wagon […] Share this:Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)
Mercier Orchards
U-Pick • Bakery • Market • Farm Store • Restaurant • Farm WineryOnce upon a time, there was a magical orchard in a quiet little mountain town in North Georgia. Only the most wonderful things grew there — apples and strawberries, peaches and blueberries, all kinds of things. You could even pick your own apples! People came to the little town from all over because it was so much fun to visit. That magical orchard is still here: It’s called Mercier Orchards. And it’s located in the mountain town of Blue Ridge. Mercier Orchards is a fourth-generation, family-owned and operated apple orchard. Started back in 1943 by Bill & Adele Mercier, Mercier Orchards is now celebrating 70+ years of fruitful harvests! Of course you’ll want to visit for the U-Pick events, whether it’s apples in the fall, strawberries in the spring or blueberries and blackberries in the summer. But there’s so much more to do and see anytime of the year, including: Tractor rides and farm tours Delicious fried pies, cakes, donuts and more in the bakery Tasty breakfast, lunch and dinner served in the on-site restaurant Huge store featuring jams, jellies, honey, fresh produce and more Made-on-site farm wines, hard ciders and fresh ciders Tasting room with wines from other local […] Share this:Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)

Folk Apothics
Organic Produce & Herbs • Handmande Textiles • Seeds • EggsThe Herbiary of Blue Ridge is a place of herbal wisdom, Appalachian comradery and general knowledge of all things folk. Owners Luke and Amanda tap deep into their Appalachian roots as purveyors of wild-gathered herbs and spices, teas, salves, ointments, extractions, and bath & body goods. Many of the herbs and products come directly from their small farm, where they use all-organic growing practices (or what Luke’s great- grandfather simply called … farming). Stories and wisdom are shared through hands-on workshops, and there’s always something fresh to savor. Stop by, sit on the couch with a cup of hand-blended tea or tap your inner rhythm at the Friday drum circle. All products at the Herbiary of Blue Ridge are organic, GMO-free or wildharvested, unless otherwise noted. Each of the products holds a story. Whether gathered under a forest canopy sharing time with his daughter or harvesting corn for the CSA under a full moon well into the witching hour with the entire family, everything here holds a mountain memory. Stop by, sit on the couch with a cup of hand-blended tea, and allow owners Luke & Amanda to tell you one. Or share one of your own with them. 7M Family Farms
Family Farm • Pesticide-Free Fruits & Vegetables • Hydroponic Strawberries, Lettuce & Tomatoes“From Our Land to Your Hands” is the motto at 7M Family Farms, a family-owned small farm in Blairsville with farming roots that stretch back 100 years. Fourth generation grower Dick Mills combines organic open field farming with an impressive greenhouse and hydroponics operation. The result is a year-round bounty of flavorful, locally grown fruits and vegetables. The farm is making a name for itself with its impossibly plump-and juicy hydroponic strawberries — but don’t miss the hydroponic tomatoes, lettuce, cilantro, kale and peppers, too. Mills also works a variety of traditional row crops, such as okra, cucumbers, sweet corn, cabbage and pumpkin, all of which are grown pesticide-free using organic supplies and non-GMO seeds. 7M Family Farms rolls out the farm-fresh goodness Tuesdays and Saturdays at the Union County Farmers Market, as well as through a CSA program. But there’s no beating a drive out to the farm, where you’ll find a farm market, seasonal u-pick opportunities, farm tours and an assortment of arts & crafts. Visit the website or call for hours & days of operation. Aaron’s Apple House
Apple Picking • Farm Products • Fried PiesShafter Aaron had to find more ways to care for his family. It is fairly true that though Wall Street fell, that many in this area of the country did not feel its effects, but everyone had to find something to help out their families. For Shafter and his four sons, this was Apples. He started operations in 1938, prior to the US entering World War II as a way to bring in just a little more income for his family. Right next to his house he started construction on what would would come to be known as “Aaron’s Apple House”. This facility was for the whole sale and retail sale of apples and other agricultural products. All of the four children worked on the farm, which raised Chickens and apples, and at a later date would raise cattle. Throughout his life Shafter was involved throughout the Gilmer County community and in north Georgia. He regularly took his boys with him to a hardware store in Dawsonville that was owned by Bill Elliot’s father. His wife, Reba, served as a lunch lady at Oakland School for over 20 years before her retirement. Animals are raised in a pasture and in the woods in a stress-free environment and they are & handled humanely throughout all stages of life. The cattle are grass-fed and grass-finished. Pigs are a Heritage Berkshire Hamp/York Cross. Mountain Valley Farms processes only a small number of animals; there are no assembly lines. Beef is available in a variety of cuts, on a limited basis, including filets, New York strips, rib eyes, prime rib, ground beef, London broil and more. The beef is also dry aged. Dry aging involves hanging the beef in a cooler for several weeks near freezing temperature to allow moisture to evaporate from the muscle. This concentrates and saturates the beef flavor and allows the natural beef enzymes to help break down the connective tissue making the beef more tender. Only high grades of beef can be dry aged as the process requires an evenly distributed fat content – something that is inherent in grass-fed beef. You rarely find aged beef […] Share this:Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)

Sunrise Grocery
Seasonal Produce • Honey & Sorghum • Hams • CheesesSunrise Grocery is a little country market with something for everyone! First open for business in this picturesque setting in the early 1920’s, we are one of the oldest businesses in Union County — and we can sure tell some stories about our colorful past! Our customers come roaring up on the shiniest of Harley’s and some really hardy ones pedal their way to Sunrise Grocery on mountain bikes. We have gassed up the most beloved battered pickup trucks and the fanciest Mercedes sedans. Some folks have been coming here all their lives, and some of our visitors will only pass this way once. Whether young or young-at-heart, there is something for everyone at Sunrise Grocery!
